Varicose veins are enlarged veins that are noticeable and usually found on the back of calves or the inside of the leg. In the past, surgery was invasive and normally the only option. However, a new procedure called endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) has resulted in fewer complications and a high success of cosmetic improvement. The interventional radiologist uses laser energy to close off the flow of blood in the damaged vein. This prevents the vein from enlarging and bulging. The procedure usually takes less than an hour and is normally done on an outpatient basis.
