 Radiology Library Policy

The Radiology department has a large library system to provide books for reference and study to faculty and residents. Comprehensive collections of books are available in each hospital. A computer reference list is also available that will enable you to identify which books are held by the Radiology library system and where they are located. The filing and coding system for the various hospitals has been unified and is now identical in each hospital.  We are currently updating the filing and coding system to allow for a computerized databas listing all loaner books which would allow any resident to see whom has what book out and its expected return date.

Library Organization

The library books are divided into three categories.

1)    Reference Books. Each hospital has a library room in which a large reference collection is kept. The books are not to be removed from this room. Your conscientious effort to adhere to this policy will be greatly appreciated.

2)   Service Books. Many of the services have a small collection of books deemed necessary for their everyday reporting. These books are located ideally in the reading areas for each service. Again, these books should not be removed from these areas. The intention is that they are immediately available for reference during your reporting.

3)    Loaner Books. The books are available to the residents, to be signed out during their rotations.  Remember to return loaner books at the end of the rotation so other residents can benefit from this resource.

Usage Guidelines for Loaners, Reference, and Service Copies

Please be sure you are aware of and follow these basic rules:

Book Guidelines & Information for Reference Books, Service Copies, and Loaners

Department of Radiology

1.    Reference books are to remain in the Reference library.  Re-shelving rules vary at each library.

2.    Service Copy books are to stay in their Reading Rooms (they are Reference books for the Section)

3.    Loaner Library books (includes CDs, tapes)

a)  Resident Use  Preference to borrow books is given to the residents at the hospital where they are currently on rotation.  Residents who need loaners that are not found at their current rotation hospital are welcome to borrow the loaners from the other hospitals if they are not already on loan to that hospital’s current rotating resident.

Faculty and Fellows may borrow our loaners on a limited basis and only if residents don’t currently need them.

Any loaner book leaving the library for any length of time must be signed out.  Please hand the sign-out card to the librarian.   When returning the book, please hand it directly to the librarian. If s/he is not in, attach a note to the book with your name & that you are returning the loaner.

b) Due Date:  Loaner books should be considered due at the end of rotation for the benefit of availability for the next rotating residents

c) The last signature on the loaner card is the person responsible for the book's return.  If someone else wants the book, the original borrower should first return the book, then the next person needs to sign it out.

Caution:  If you hand off a book directly to another resident, you will be released from responsibility only IF that next person actually comes in with the book to sign for it, or through an agreement made with the librarian.

 d)  Lost books:  The last person who signed the sign-out card can have the expense deducted from his/her book allowance, but if the balance due is more than the remaining book allowance, that person will be billed for the difference.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Note:  We have an electronic listing of all our books, CDs, videos.  Please ask one of our library people if you wish to see our book inventory list.
