Radiology Clerkship Attendance and Absence Policy for 2010-2011
Since the radiology clerkship is a core clerkship in the School of Medicine’scurriculum, attendance is mandatory. Here is the direct quote from the IUSOM Fourth Year Time Off/Attendance “Policy: CORE CLERKSHIPS, Time off from the required fourth year core clerkships (radiology, emergency medicine, and the medicine sub-internship) is NOT allowed, except for national examinations, required School examinations (OSCEs) and commencement activities. Whenever possible, students should not schedule the Step2 Ck or Step 2 CS exam when it would conflict with the assigned responsibilities of one of the required core clerkship rotations.”
We understand that there are personal and business related reasons that might require students to miss a day or part of a day. Whenever a student needs to be absent, please notify the radiologist(s) with whom you are working and Ruth Patterson. We deal with each excused absence on an individual case basis.
According to medical school policy, sitting for the USMLE II exams or the IUSM fourth year OSCE are the only standard reasons for an excused absence from a required clinical rotation. We will also excuse you one day for funerals or births. If a student is representing the School of Medicine or presenting a paper at a national meeting, one day of absence is permitted with no penalty. Please notify us as soon as possible should you need to request an excused absence.
Students who have been absent (unexcused) will have the following adjustments made to their final grade: If absent for 1 full day - minus 1 point, if absent for 2 full days - minus 3 points, if absent for 3 full days - minus 6 points, if absent for 4 full days - minus 10 points. It is important to note that being absent by 5 or more days essentially makes passing the course impossible. Students missing 5 or more days will need to repeat the clerkship.
