 Fellow and Resident Interactions

VIR Fellow and Radiology Resident Interactions

It is the goal of the Interventional Radiology section to train the radiology residents in the fundamentals of vascular and interventional radiology. This includes hands-on training as primary operator for basic 'bread and butter' cases and assisting in more complex cases. The IR fellow(s) should enhance rather than detract from the rotating resident's experience.

Whenever possible, 1 or 2 cases a day will be designated as a 'resident case' where the resident is responsible for the case from start to finish including the pre-procedure work-up, informed consent, being primary operator for the case, procedure note, and follow-up. Residents will also participate in other cases to the level of their abilities. When working with the residents, the fellows should serve as a mentor for the resident.

The radiology resident rotating on IR will also assist the IR fellows and staff in all of the activities of the section including pre-procedure work-up of patients, pre-procedure orders, participation in procedures, immediate post-procedure workup and orders, daily rounds and notes on inpatients, admitting patients to the VIR service, seeing patients for a clinical follow-up visit, and working up the next day's patients as detailed above in the IR Fellows Duties section.
