The cardiothoracic imaging fellowship includes training in all aspects of thoracic and cardiac imaging. Training will include plain film, cross-sectional (CT and MRI) interpretation as well as invasive procedures of the thorax including biopsies and drainages.  A focus will be placed on cross-sectional imaging of the pulmonary and cardiovascular systems. There will be an approximately equal time spent performing and interpreting pulmonary and cardiac imaging studies.  Hands-on experience at performing cardiac exams is emphasized.  Training is provided in both adult and pediatric cardiac imaging.      

The cardiothoracic service manages its own complications, so training in the insertion and management of chest tubes for the treatment of pneumothoraces  as well as experience in other thoracic interventional skills, such as the performance of thoracenteses, pleurodesis and abscess drainage, will occur.

Fellowship training does not only incorporate clinical training, but also academic experiences. The fellow is expected to develop and complete a research project during the course of the year. It is also intended that the project be suitable for presentation at a scientific meeting and ultimately published in a peer review journal. The research may be clinical or of a more basic nature, taking advantage of the physicists on the faculty, as well as the large, fully equipped canine lab.
