As Director of the Indiana Center of Excellence in Biomedical Imaging, Dr. Hutchins strives to create a scientific environment that integrates the medical, biological, chemical, engineering, and imaging sciences to advance human health through the development of biomedical imaging technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Dr. Hutchins graduated from the Medical Physics program at the University of Wisconsin in 1984. Upon completion of his graduate training, he was offered a research position in the PET program at the University of Michigan. While at the University of Michigan he was actively involved the development and application of PET imaging methods for the study of the central nervous system and the heart. In 1992, Dr. Hutchins was recruited to the Indiana University School of Medicine to serve as the Director of a newly established PET facility. In 1996, Dr. Hutchins was appointed as the Director of the Imaging Science Division in the Department of Radiology. The Division of Imaging Science consists of 16 Basic Science faculty and 54 graduate students/post-doctoral fellows/scientific support staff. In 1999, Dr. Hutchins was then appointed as the Vice Chairman for Research for the Department of Radiology at Indiana University. Dr. Hutchins is the John W. Beeler Professor of Radiology.

A principal focus of Dr. Hutchins' activities since he was recruited to Indiana University in 1992 has been the development of imaging resources to serve as a center in support of inter-departmental and inter-institutional research activities. At the time Dr. Hutchins arrived on campus, the application of functional or physiological imaging by research scientists throughout the institution was negligible. Over the past several years, the incorporation of physiologic based imaging techniques into numerous research programs has occurred through collaborative efforts between Dr. Hutchins and the investigators of these programs resulting in the development of significant imaging efforts in functional neuroimaging, functional cardiovascular imaging, and cancer biology.

Dr. Hutchins' efforts over the past several years have lead the way for more recent awards from the Indiana 21st Century Fund and the National Cancer Institute (NIH). These awards along with funding from Radiology and the Indiana Genomics Initiative have provided the necessary resources for the establishment of the Indiana Center of Excellence in Biomedical Imaging (IN-CEBI). DR. Hutchins currently serves as the Director of the IN-CEBI.

Dr. Hutchins personal research interests center around the development and application of imaging techniques to non-invasively monitor physiologic and biochemical processes rates in-vivo. His research activities include the development of PET imaging instrumentation for small animal and dedicated imaging applications, and the development of mathematical approaches to quantify physiological rates based upon measured image data. He is also actively involved in the application of these tools to study tumor progression and response to therapy, the cardiac autonomic nervous system and its disruption in disease, the functional response of the human brain to sensory, cognitive, or pharmacologic stimulation, and the study of perfusion and metabolism throughout the body.
