Veins are part of our circulatory system and play a very important role in keeping us healthy. They can also be the source of pain in our lower legs and unsightly markings on the surface of our skin. When the condition of our veins begin to falter, physical signs may appear, such as varicose or spider veins. These ailments can become very noticeable, more painful, and could lead to serious complications.

An interventional radiologist begins by evaluating the severity of the vein disorder using ultrasound (sound waves) and measuring the extent of the damage. There are several interventional procedures that may be considered based on the condition and specific needs of the patient. One of the best treatment plans involves permament closing of the vein using a laser.

spider veins before after.jpgEndovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is a very successful, minimally invasive treatment for improving the function of veins. The procedure is done as an outpatient basis offering substantial savings and allowing for a very minimal recovery time. A very small catheter with a laser tip is inserted inside the problem vessel and heat is applied. The vein is closed resulting in better improvement in blood flow around the affected area. EVLT does not require hospitalization and is much more cost effective than surgery. Patients report a noticeable improvement in their appearance as the veins are restored to a much fuller function with a dramatic decrease in pain suffering. EVLT is proving to be a very effective alternative to surgery and in most cases, a full return to normal activties occurs right after treatment.

Depending on the diagnosis and the needs of the patient, Sclerotherapy and Ambulatory Ablation are also available for the management of varicose veins. Sclerotheraphy is an interventional technique that has the benefit of excellent results when the problems veins are too small for laser treatment. A very small amount of a substance is inserted into the varicose vein causing the vessel to shrink and disappear. Another therapy for venous disorders is Ambulatory Ablation. This approach involves the interventional radiologist ensuring a pain free procedure by numbing up the affected area. A very tiny incision is made along the path of the varicose vein and the troubled vein is then gently removed. Both of these procedures are much more cost effective than surgery and the patient almost always returns to normal activties immediately following the procedure.
