A form of benign (non-cancerous) growths found commonly in women are call fibroids. These tumors are found in the uterus and can cause unusual bleeding and severe pain. A minimally invasive procedure called uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) can eliminate the fibroids and allow the female to avoid surgery and minimize the period of recovery. An interventional radiologist begins by inserting a very small tube (catheter) into the blood vessels surrounding the fibroid tumor. By injecting clotting agents (embolization) through the catheter, blood flow is halted and the tumor shrinks and disappear.
Uterine fibroids are the most frequent indication for hysterectomy in pre-menopausal women and therefore, are a major public health issue. Of the 600,000 hysterectomies performed annually in the United States, 1/3 of these are due to fibroids. A uterine fibroid embolization treatment is highly effective, widely available and often replaces the need for a hysterectomy.
