Retrieving Patient Images:

Topics

      1. Perform a search to generate the list of patients whose examinations were performed since midnight of the current day by entering "1" in the "Number of days covered" field of the query box.
      2. After clicking "OK", the system will retrieve the patient list. In this example, names and IDs have been intentionally blurred to protect patient confidentiality.
      3. Sort the patient list by clicking the headings at the top.
        • Patient Name - click here for alphabetical sort by last name
        • Patient ID - click here to sort by the patient medical record number
        • Date - click here to sort by date and time (24 hour clock)
        • ID - internal parameter, not helpful at present
        • Accession - VA is the only site with legitimate accession numbers = 6 digit date plus hyphen plus case number
        • Ref. Physician - not too helpful; information is not always present
      4. Use the vertical scroll bar at the right side of the patient list to locate the patient. Select the patient by clicking on the line containing the patient information; When selected, the line will turn blue. Click on the "Choose" button at the top of the patient list to retrieve the patient examination list.
      5. The patient examination list can be sorted by clicking the headings at the top of the list.
        • Number - click here to sort by series order
          • For MR studies, these series represent different pulse sequence acquisitions. The first 1 or 2 series are often locator scans.
          • For CT studies, these series represent different acquisitions (e.g., pre and post contrast). The first few series are often scout views.
        • Label - not helpful at present
        • Modality - self explanatory
        • # Images - not helpful at present
        • Date - not helpful at present
      6. Select a series by clicking on the series number and the line will turn blue.
      7. Click "Choose" at the top of the list to retrieve the image list.
        • There are three important rectangular selection boxes just above the top of the image list. On the left hand side, there is a "Select" box, on the middle right there is a "Compression:" box, and on the right hand side there is a "Quality:" box.
          • Select: use this box to select all images, no images, every 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 10th image.
            • Note: to select the proton density weighted images from a multi-echo MR acquisition, highlight slice number 1 and choose the "every 2nd" option from the "Select ..." box. To select the T2 weighted images, highlight slice number 2 and choose the "every 2nd" option.
            • In addition to the "Select ..." box, there are two buttons at the top of the screen to allow selection of all or no images.
          • Compression: use this box to select the compression method.
            • Very Important: when retrieving images on campus choose "uncompressed".
            • When off campus, use "Lossless Progressive" to retrieve images.
          • Quality: this box is variably present; it is best left in "Default" mode.
      8. If the "Select All" button at the top of the image list is pressed, every image in the series will be highlighted in blue.
      9. To retrieve all of these images, select the "Choose" button at the top of the image list.
        • If there are more than about 30 CT images, it is advisable to retrieve a subset of the images.
          • To view minified thumbnail images, select the "Icons" button. This is the recommended method when retrieving image subsets.
          • Select the thumbnail images you wish to retrieve by clicking on them once. The frames around the images will change from green to yellow (this is hard to see).
          • You may use the "Select ..."  dropdown box to choose subsets of images (e.g., every 2nd image, every 3rd, etc.) from the thumbnail page.
          • Verify that the compression method is appropriate for your location:
            • off campus: lossless progressive
            • on campus: uncompressed
          • Click on the "Choose" button in the upper left hand corner of the window to retrieve the images.
          • Images will be retrieved and displayed in a separate browser window. In this example, images were retrieved using the lossy compressed method. The images arrive in several groups. These groups of images are progressively more detailed in terms of image quality. The level of image compression is displayed in the upper-middle area of each image frame. A set of progressively decompressed  images can be viewed here: set 1, set 2, final set.
